Spring & Summer Maintenance
The Town of Drayton Valley is committed to maintaining streets, parks, and public spaces that are safe, clean, and welcoming for all residents and visitors.
Our dedicated team works hard throughout the spring and summer months to keep the community looking its best through regular street sweeping, pothole repairs, sidewalks and trail maintenance, weed control and spraying, and scheduled maintenance of parks, cemetery, flower beds, playgrounds, ponds, and public areas.
LEARN ABOUT SPRING & SUMMER MAINTENANCE
Our Public Works and seasonal crews mow 294 acres of green space on a 9-day rotation.
Greenspaces include:
- Grass mowing and trimming
- Garbage pickup in parks and along walking paths
- Flower bed/ planter maintenance
- Tree/ shrub pruning
- Playground inspections, repairs and maintenance
These activities are dependent on weather conditions, staff resources, equipment availability, and emergent situations that may require immediate response.
The Town maintains
- 56 km of Sidewalks
- 25 km of Trails
- 15 Parks and Greenspaces
- 15 Ponds,
- 2 Cemeteries
- Flowerbeds in the downtown area and throughout the community
- Grounds at all Town facilities
- Boulevards
- Dog Park
- Sports Fields
Benefits of Spraying:
Dandelions and broadleaf weeds increase mowing time
Dandelions and other broadleaf weeds cause tremendous stresses in mowing operations that are very costly
Spraying improves the look and health of our green spaces
Better turf = better parks for all of us to enjoy

Weed Spraying & Bees
We understand how important pollinators like bees are to our environment, and we want to reassure residents that we are being very mindful in how we approach weed spraying.
- The herbicide we use targets broadleaf weeds like dandelions — not insects. It has little to no impact on bees themselves.
- We’re also mindful of bee food sources. While we do treat a few select green spaces, there are still many flowering trees, plants, and natural areas in and around Drayton Valley that continue to provide healthy forage for pollinators.
Your safety (and your pet’s!) matters to us. Our trained staff apply herbicides according to provincial safety guidelines and always post signs to give everyone a heads-up. As long as treated areas are avoided during the short window after spraying, there’s no health risk to people or animals.
Weed Enforcement Program
The Weed Control Act of Alberta directs that all landowners are responsible for controlling noxious and prohibited noxious weeds on their property. This requirement also includes the Town. The Town is responsible for controlling weeds on properties under the Town’s control and directing private landowners/tenants to do so on their properties as well, should the property owner fail to control the weeds.
Roads
The Town maintains 83 kms of paved roads, 8 kms of gravel roads, 3 kms of paved lanes, and 16 kms of gravel lanes
During the spring and summer months, a great deal of work goes into maintaining our roads and trails for our active community members. These activities include:
- Pothole maintenance
- Patch paving
- Line painting
- Street sweeping
- Gravel road grading
- Dust control
Potholes
Potholes are a common problem created by the freeze-thaw cycles.
Water seeps into cracks
Freezing expands the water, breaking the pavement
Thawing allows water to evaporate, leaving a hole and allowing water to seep deeper into cracks
This cycle repeats, making potholes bigger and more frequent
As vehicles drive over the area, the pavement begins to crumble and a pothole appears. The more traffic on a pothole the faster it grows.
Potholes can be reported through our Customer Service Portal
Every spring, over 82 km of streets are cleared of gravel, sand and debris that have accumulated over the winter; this keeps the town clean and safe for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists. Street sweeping also reduces water pollution by preventing the run-off of sanding materials and debris from entering our water system.
Major arterial and collector roads are swept first, followed by residential sweeping. This work will be completed as weather permits.
The Town relies on the cooperation of vehicle owners to ensure the effective clearing of our roads:
- Watch for signs in your area indicating when your road is scheduled for sweeping.
- Remove vehicles from the road so that the road can be swept.
Always give our equipment plenty of space – in front, behind and on both sides.
These ongoing efforts help enhance the appearance and enjoyment of Drayton Valley, creating spaces everyone can take pride in.
Keeping our community looking it’s best requires everyone’s help.
The Town’s Community Standards Bylaw requires property owners to maintain their property and adjacent boulevards to reasonable standards.
