Snow Removal and Seasonal Parking Ban

Dealing with snow is a big part of living in Drayton Valley. The Public Works Department is responsible for snow removal on Town roads and is committed to helping make Drayton Valley safe for pedestrians and motorists, especially throughout the winter months.

Removing snow and ice from the roads increases mobility and safety for motorists and pedestrians, reduces rutting and rough ice conditions and effectively manage stormwater flows when the snow melts.

snow removal schedule & maps

Snowfall amounts determine when we plow.

The chart below outlines when each priority route is cleared.

Should we receive more snow while in the middle of snow removal operations, our crews will be re-deployed to priority 1 & 2 routes.  Residential clearing will resume where we left off.

residential clearing

Residential snow removal starts once the priority routes have been cleared and are completed on a rotating basis.

Notifications will be posted on the Town’s website and social media channels when snow removal occurs in residential quadrants.

Please remember to obey “No Parking” signs; parked vehicles in the “No Parking” areas are subject to ticketing and towing. However, parking is acceptable in residential areas overnight between the hours of 7:00 pm and 7:00 am.

sidewalks

Be a good neighbour this winter.  When we get snowy or icy weather, keeping our sidewalks clear is one of the best ways we can look out for each other. Clear walkways make it safer for everyone, especially kids walking to school, seniors, and anyone with mobility challenges.

48 HOURS

If you have a sidewalk beside your property, please clear it within 48 hours after a snowfall.

A bit of sand or de-icer can also make a big difference in preventing slips.

PLACEMENT

Snow should be shovelled onto your own property, not pushed out onto the street.  Snow pushed onto the street creates challenges for crews and machinery including:

  • Causing water to pool along sidewalks, driveways and preventing effective snow/ice removal
  • Causes rough road conditions and hazards for vehicles

REMINDER:

Section 7 and 8 of the Town’s Community Standards Bylaw states that snow should be cleared from sidewalks within 48 hours of a snowfall and that snow should be shovelled onto the yard, not the street.  Violators are subject to fines:

First Offence: $250, Second Offence: $500
Additional Offence: Mandatory Court Appearance

sanding

Sanding is done throughout the winter season to improve mobility around the community.

We encourage the public to sand/salt their walkways to further improve mobility for pedestrians. To help with that, a sand mixture is made available to the public, for free, and is located in the parking lot behind the Eleanor Pickup Arts Centre.

If you notice an area that could use some sand, please contact us through our customer service portal.

Seasonal parking ban

Seasonal parking bans are declared when there is significant snow and ice accumulation and during major plowing events and will be in place until it is lifted.

When a parking ban is called, vehicles on the seasonal parking routes must be removed from the street.  This allows our crews to clear snow and ice in these areas quickly and efficiently.

The seasonal parking ban are located in the following areas:

  • 50 Street, from 54 Avenue (Industrial Road) south to 52 Avenue, 50 Avenue to 46 Avenue
  • 50 Avenue from 43 Street west to 54 Street

Permanent signage is in place, clearly identifying the seasonal parking ban route areas

When a seasonal parking ban is called, no parking is permitted on the designated seasonal snow routes and remains in force until the ban is lifted.

Snow removal along seasonal parking ban routes begins at 7:00 a.m. and continues until the streets are clear.

Vehicles left on the street slow down operations, pose hazards for our equipment and result in a build up of snow along the curbs.

Any vehicles parked on seasonal parking ban routes while bans are in effect may be ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s expense.  This includes when windrows are present.

NOTIFICATION

Information on the seasonal parking ban will be posted on the Town’s:

snow angel program

Lend a hand this year and assist a senior or community member with low mobility with keeping their walkways and driveways clear of ice and snow. Cleared walkways can make a world of difference in allowing safe accessibility in and out of a senior’s home.

There are two ways you can help:

Take some extra time when shoveling your sidewalk or ploughing your own driveway and give your neighbour a hand OR call 780-514-2206 and register as a volunteer with the Snow Angels program and be matched with a senior.

Volunteers may be individuals, families, teams or groups who enjoy working outside, want to make community connections, and prefer a flexible volunteer schedule.

If you are a resident who would like to sign up for Snow Angel services, please call the Town at 780-514-2206 to register.
