2021 Election Candidate Information
Find information below for candidates running in the next General Election on Monday, October 18, 2021. You can run for mayor, or one of six councillors.
Nomination papers must be filed with the Town of Drayton Valley between January 4 and September 20, 2021, at noon. Nomination papers can be filed by mail or in-person by appointment.
The Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) governs elections for Alberta’s local jurisdictions, including the Town of Drayton Valley. All candidates should check the LAEA for complete details on the nomination process.
Eligibility
All candidates must be eligible to vote in the election. All candidates must be:
- at least 18 years old,
- a Canadian citizen,
- reside in the Town of Drayton Valley on Election Day, and
- reside in the Town of Drayton Valley for the 6 months before Nomination Day.
Candidates are subject to further requirements in the Local Authorities Election Act and are advised to refer to the LAEA and obtain legal advice regarding the full extent of their obligations.
Nomination Forms
All candidates are required to submit the following forms:

Nomination Checklist & Submission
Complete required forms.
- Ensure you have completed Form 4 and Form 5
- Form 4 must be signed by: A Commissioner of Oaths or Notary Public for Alberta, or The Returning Officer or delegate
- Form 5 should include campaign banking information. Do not use personal banking information.
Review campaign finance obligations
- Review new requirements for 2021.
- Obtain your own legal advice.
Obtain the required number of signatures.
- Persons signing a candidate’s nomination paper must be an eligible elector (i.e. 18 years of age, Canadian citizen, resident of Alberta for the six consecutive months immediately preceding the day of signing and resident of the Town of Drayton Valley
- Original hand-written signatures are required. Digital signatures are not accepted.
- A minimum of 5 signatures is required. It is advisable to have more than the minimum required number of electors sign the form in case one or more signatures are not eligible to nominate.
File your nomination forms.
All candidates must provide Form 4, and Form 5 completed in full to the Town of Drayton Valley before noon on September 20, 2021.
Choose ONE of the following methods to file your nomination forms:
1. By appointment. Call 780-514-2209 to book an appointment.
2. By mail or courier. Send completed forms and deposit to the Town of Drayton Valley, 5120 – 52 Street, Box 6837, Drayton Valley, Alberta, T7A 1A1.
3. By secure 24 hour drop box. Completed forms can be dropped off at the Town of Drayton Valley Civic Centre mail slot. Drop box location: 5120 – 52 Street Drayton Valley, AB, Canada T7A 1A1.

Financial Disclosure
All candidates, whether self-funded or accepting contributions, and third party advertisers must file a disclosure statement after the election with the municipality in which they sought election or advertised.
Your Campaign
The Returning Officer will answer questions from the media and the public on the voting process.
Candidates do not have to inform the Returning Officer of their campaign activities or provide copies of campaign contribution receipts.

The 2021 election campaign period is January 1 to December 31, 2021.
Candidates should be aware of the following during the campaign period:
Form of a ballot
Candidates cannot use an image of a ballot in their advertising. The candidate’s name with an “X” beside is not considered to be an image of a ballot. Contact the Returning Officer with questions on the acceptability of material.
Voting stations
Campaigning or campaign materials (e.g. buttons, signs, cars with banners, t-shirts) are not permitted in voting stations or on voting station property on voting days.
Election signs
All signs musts comply with applicable Town of Drayton Valley Bylaws.
Complaints about the location of election signs should be made to a candidates’ office first.
Campaign workers
Candidates can provide the required identification access forms to their campaign workers.
Official agents
Candidates may appoint an official agent when they submit their nomination papers. Candidates are not required to appoint an official agent.
An official agent must be an elector (eligible to vote, see section 47 of the LAEA). The duties of an official agent are those assigned by the candidate.
Scrutineers
Scrutineers may be appointed by candidates to observe during the Advance Vote and on Election Day. Scrutineers must be 18 years of age or over. A person convicted of an offence under the Local Authorities Election Act, the Elections Act, or the Canada Elections Act in the past 10 years cannot be a scrutineer.
Scrutineers may observe election process except for voters marking their ballots. Scrutineers may attend more than one voting station. Scrutineers cannot vouch for a person to validate their identity and address.
Election Day
Election day is Monday, October 18, 2021. As a candidate, you can expect the following:
- Election day voting hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- You can appoint scrutineers to observe the voting process and tabulation of results.
Campaign activities
Campaigning or campaign materials (e.g. buttons, signs, cars with banners, t-shirts) are not permitted in voting stations or on voting station property on voting days.
Results
- Unofficial results will be published as they become available after the close of voting stations on Election Day.
- Do not call the Elections & Census Office for results on Election Day.
- Official results are available by noon on Friday, October 22, 2021.
