Sustainability
Drayton Valley’s Community Sustainability Plan 2015-2019(CSP) is set to expire at the end of 2019. In preparation for this, the Sustainability Committee initiated the development of a Sustainability Vision 2019-2021 in the Fall 2018 . The Sustainability Vision affords Town Council, Administration, the Sustainability Committee and the overall organization the opportunity to enhance sustainability in prioritized areas and projects as outlined in the Vision.

Did you know that Drayton Valley has a Community Sustainability Plan? And that the Town of Drayton Valley won awards in both 2012 (Federation of Canadian Municipalities) & 2013 (Alberta Urban Municipalities Association) for our sustainability plan? We updated our plan in 2014, and our Community Sustainability Plan is our guiding document for the next five years.

While sustainability may be more frequently used in the context of the environment, it is important to note that sustainability applies to every facet of life. The World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainability as “forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. Therefore “sustainability” touches on all areas: social, economic, health, cultural, and environmental. All of these areas need to be planned and managed to ensure a great quality of life for new and future residents of Drayton Valley.
Drayton Valley’s five pillars of sustainability are:
Health and social services
Arts, culture, and heritage
Governance and partnerships
Economic development
The natural and man-made environment
The Town of Drayton Valley’s Sustainability Plan addresses all community aspects that are impacted by our actions, whether this is in how we are reducing our ecological footprint or in what we are doing to create an optimum quality of life for our residents. The goal of sustainability is to enhance our community in all sectors and areas of life. The Town of Drayton Valley recently joined the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Partners for Climate Protection program. In joining this program, we are joining 287 other municipalities across the country who are working to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and ecological footprint. Drayton Valley is proud to be moving ahead with completing Milestones 1-3 of the PCP program over the next few months.
