Have you registered for CAPTURE?
Community Assisted Policing Through Use of Recorded Evidence is a voluntary camera registry that records the locations of security cameras in Alberta.
Security cameras often capture evidence that can be used to solve a crime. RCMP can use CAPTURE to view the list of camera locations and contact the registered camera owners. By providing the location of your security cameras, you could be key in helping solve crimes or identify criminals.

Citizens can now report select crimes online to the RCMP!
A variety of crimes can be reported online, including vandalism, thefts under $5000, and lost property where there are no suspects identified. Please be aware that a typical report will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
All reports will be followed up with a phone call by a police officer within five (5) business days.
To report your concern online, please visit Alberta RCMP Online Crime Report Page.
Bike Index is a non-profit, online bike registry to prove ownership, alert the community if a bike has been stolen, search a found bicycle to identify its owner and help police return recovered bicycles to their rightful owners as soon as possible.
Bike Index is used by individual bike owners, bike shops and police services. If a registered bike is stolen, an owner can login and make note that their bike is missing. In the event it is recovered by police, or looked up by an unsuspecting buyer, its status on Bike Index will appear as stolen and alert those searching that serial number.
If your bicycle has been stolen call the RCMP and provide them with a description of the bike, including its serial number, for your best chance to recover it. If you don’t have a serial number, it can be challenging to identify your bike and prove your ownership.

While there is no way to completely eliminate the risk of theft, police advise cyclists to always use a good lock – a U-lock is recommended. Lock your wheels and frame together, use a designated bike rack as sign poles, trees, fences, etc. are not as secure, lock bikes in well-lit, well-traveled areas, when possible do not leave a locked bike on a public street overnight and at home secure your bike – locked up if possible – in a locked garage or shed.

Vehicles
Traditionally, the fall and winter months are when Police see a spike in vehicle thefts – primarily related to people starting their vehicles to warm them up before leaving. Unfortunately, criminals often use this opportunity to their advantage and capitalize on unlocked doors.
The following are some tips to prevent your vehicles from being stolen:
Utilize where you can, and if equipped, your vehicle’s remote start system. This will allow your vehicle to start without fear of it being stolen, as it will shut off with any attempt to drive away. Consider installing a remote start system if you do not currently have one.
If you have to start your vehicle with the keys to keep it running, it’s recommended to stay inside the cab with your doors locked to prevent them being opened unexpectedly. If you have a garage, consider parking it inside to prevent frost on your windows, however never start a car and warm it inside the garage – pull it out to warm it up!
A frequent cause of vehicle thefts is when drivers go inside a business “just for a few seconds” and leave the vehicle running, only to come out and find their vehicle gone. Always shut off and lock your vehicle if leaving it alone. Thieves will use these opportunities to steal vehicles.
Some car makers have systems available, with a valid subscription, to locate vehicles if they are stolen. There are also several aftermarket suppliers that can GPS your vehicle as well.
Security means some inconvenience, but it’s better to be a little inconvenienced than to lose your vehicle to a moment of lapsed vigilance.
Valuables
In addition to car theft, theft of valuables from homes and businesses is also on the rise. In order to help police locate, and offer your valuables back to you upon seizure, please write down and store the serial numbers for all electronics. If you are able to identify the serial number of your phone, tablet, computer, etc. it will help the police get your stolen goods back to you more quickly!
While this is not an exhaustive list of tips, these will help residents keep their vehicles and belongings safe and secure!
