Drayton Valley Aquatic Facility
Watch a virtual fly through of the facility below!
On August 25th, 2020, during a Special Meeting of Council, Town Council directed Administration to move forward with the construction of a new Aquatic Facility, as presented in the Validation Report.

This motion came following the successful receipt of grant funding from the Government of Canada’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) in the amount of $7,584,956.00. On August 25th, 2020, the federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Catherine McKenna announced that the grant application had been approved!
As part of the Final Budget for 2020 Town Council committed $5 million to the constructions of a new Aquatic Facility, and Brazeau County also passed a motion to contribute $5 million.
This new facility will include an 8 lane, 25 metre lap pool, leisure pool and lazy river, hot tub, steam room, multi-purpose room and support spaces as well as a potential water slide. The facility has been designed to reduce operational costs by focusing on energy optimization that meets the 2017 National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB), making it energy efficient, further contributing to operational cost savings in the building.
The Town of Drayton Valley is very excited to see this new recreational facility come to fruition after many years of hard work. The Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team, which includes the architect, electrical, structural, mechanical and civil engineers, construction company, pool mechanic and Town representatives meet every Tuesday to ensure that when construction begins it can progress as smoothly as possible.
“Investing in new facilities is a critical component to any municipality, not only for the well-being and enjoyment of our residents but is an important step in growing the economy by attracting new families and visitors to Drayton Valley.”Mayor Michael Doerksen
The new pool design includes a 25 metre, 8 lane lap pool that will be deep enough for safe diving! This new pool will also be dimensioned and outfitted to suit regional and Canadian competitions standards with a large viewing area. The leisure pool, which will have a lazy river and multiple spray features, will be warm enough for small child comfort! In addition to the two pools, this new recreational facility will also have a multi-purpose room, steam room, hot tub, family change room, as well as gender specific change rooms.
The Aquatic Centre will support healthy, active lifestyles. It will also provide opportunities for families to enjoy time together and connect with the community. Drayton Valley’s new Aquatic Facility comes with numerous opportunities for sponsorship, including naming rights.
- Increased annual attendance from 86,000 in current pool to projected 116,600 visits in new aquatic centre
- Increased swimmer satisfaction as the separate tanks will allow warmer temperatures for the leisure pool users and cooler temperatures for the competition tank users
- Increased economic activity as local businesses and retailers provide services and products for the increased number of users at the aquatic centre
- Increased community growth as the Drayton Valley community will raise its prominence as a community of choice
Sponsors will be given opportunities to be actively engaged in the activities and programs of the Aquatic Centre. This can take many forms, and there are many sponsorship opportunities available!

All aspects of Drayton Valley/Brazeau County’s new Aquatic Facility are being designed with energy efficiency in mind. Contractors will be using sustainable materials, finishes and construction techniques, and both energy saving and water saving techniques wherever possible, from roof to footings. The roof will hold a 300kw photovoltaic system that will provide solar energy to the building, and the building envelope has been upgraded with a thermally broken curtain wall system. All windows will have double pane glazing, and all basins, showers, water closets, sinks, and toilets will utilize low flow technology. Continuous gutters and surge tanks will alleviate water waste due to splash out.
The 2017 NECB guidelines will be met or exceeded which limits the allowable energy used for lighting based on the building size and type. This will be achieved with the use of LED fixtures, sensors and timed controls to ensure lighting only operates when required. Further energy conservation measures include a hydronic heating system, 95% efficient condensing boilers and high efficient motors, as well as heat recovery on 100% outdoor air system.
Outdoor landscaping will include native trees and grasses which won’t require heavy maintenance and no additional water aside from that provided by Mother Nature. The Town of Drayton Valley and Brazeau County are thrilled about the efficiencies being included on our new facility and are excited to see progress begin in Spring 2021.
