International Partnership

The Town of Drayton Valley and Lushoto District Council, Tanzania, have been working together under FCM’s Municipal Partnership Program since 2004. The first phase of the partnership focused on decentralization issues within the context of Tanzania’s Local Government Reform Program, including an emphasis on community empowerment through decision-making procedures and participatory planning. Drayton Valley and Lushoto have also worked on improving Lushoto’s socio-economic capacity and promoting the tourism industry. The present phase of the partnership maintains its focus on sustainable community empowerment, and Lushoto is continuing to develop its local economic base with the active engagement of its community. During the past twelve months, two missions have taken place. The first mission to Lushoto allowed the partners to draw up a new protocol for the partnership and identify technical capacity requirements. The second mission provided training to Lushoto staff in the area of community-based participatory planning and service delivery. The development of the tourism plan to alleviate local poverty will be the main focus of the partnership. Drayton Valley will continue to support Lushoto in strategies that ensure that local residents are able to benefit from the strategies being developed by the district council.
