Will property owners face an increase in their taxes as a result of joining the town?

No. On the contrary, expanding the Town’s boundary will allow for the extension and provision of municipal utility services and infrastructure to the entire Drayton Valley urban area. Those who own property within the application area will continue to pay the same mill rates for comparable land uses in the County for a set period of time or until the registered landowner changes his or her land use. As with the 2002 annexation, the Town will attempt to ensure that newly annexed residences are not adversely affected by the change in municipal jurisdiction.

What is the financial impact on Drayton Valley as a result of this expansion?

The decision to pursue boundary expansion was partly based on the negative financial impact of having insufficient land to accommodate the Town’s level of growth. It is anticipated that this proposal will ensure that future urban and economic growth in the Drayton Valley urban area will be coordinated in a way that maximizes the community’s potential, while also enabling for the consistent provision of services to community residents. The proposed annexation and associated growth strategy will provide amenities that will positively impact the community of Drayton Valley.

What is the financial impact on Brazeau County as a result of this expansion?

It is estimated that the annexation proposed by the Town will result in a loss of 6.5% of the County’s assessment base. Arguably, because of their proximity to the Town, these lands are subsidizing other developments within the County, while using the services of the Town.
